BERNADETTE KEARNS

Dramaturg & Editor

I obtained a BA Honours Degree in English and German at University College Dublin before training as a theatre practitioner at Rose Bruford College in the UK. I graduated from Rose Bruford with a First Class BA Honours Degree in Theatre Arts and worked as a professional actress and director in Dublin and London. I have co-written three short plays which premiered in Youth and New Writing theatres in London and was a founder member of Trilogy Theatre Company which commissioned the first twentieth-century English translation of G.E. Lessing’s classic play, Emilia Galotti.

On my return to Ireland, I trained as a scriptwriter with UCD Film School and Screen Ireland. My treatment for a TV crime drama serial was optioned by leading Irish film production company, Tyrone Productions, and I have worked as a script editor/reader for London-based production company, Link Productions, for a number of years.

I have been a freelance editor/dramaturg since setting up Book Nanny Writing & Editing Services in 2013. My expertise is in structural (substantive or development) editing, using my theatre dramaturgy skills and sensitivities to help authors improve the way they tell their stories, while at the same time preserving and strengthening their own individual voices. I also offer ghostwriting, copy-editing and proofreading services to Book Nanny clients. I understand writers because I write myself and am currently working on my first crime novel set in Ireland and Germany. I am a full Member of the Association of Freelance Editors, Proofreaders and Indexers of Ireland (AFEPI Ireland).

I also work as a facilitator for creative writing and drama workshops on projects for creative centres, community groups and schools. I specialise in using theatre and dramaturgy skills to assist non-theatre creatives to develop their creativity and voice to professional performance levels.
