ORIGIN & APPROACH

Founded in 2010, Tattered Butterfly Arts was established as an umbrella organisation to house the differing strands of the new, yet maturing, dance movement theatre practice, Spiderflower: Contemporary Earth Dance, which, in turn, had been in development since 1999.

Spiderflower is a precision form concerned with the fine art of translating organic and emergent dialogue between body and earth through movement. By following this one simple remit, over the years Spiderflower has yielded a powerful and intricate body of work.

It not only offers a dance movement practice that is complete in its own right, but presents an arena where participants explore their fundamental relationship with the earth and their place within the dynamics of creation.

This has proven fertile ground where ongoing exploration brings to the fore perspectives and discoveries that we might not ordinarily question and are important to share with the wider whole.

All performance pieces are drawn from this place and deliver projects that are reflective of Spiderflower's findings. Research is taken to performance level, techniques refined, which in turn lead to a specific approach to the performance process a whole.

Dance movement theatre sits as the central focus of Tattered Butterfly Arts, but pieces can expand to interdisciplinary projects and combine media such as film, photography, sculpture, music, poetry and art.

Fascinated by the very roots of theatre, Tattered Butterfly Arts honours the ancient bonds between body, earth and our common-unity, yet it is a company dedicated to forwarding new artistic forms that are relevant and meaningful for the audiences of today.
