KETAMA LANE

Dancer / Researcher / Contributor

Ketama's ancestry is Chinese, Irish and Scottish on her mother's side, and Welsh and English to her father's side.

Born in London, Ketama lived a nomadic life travelling through Europe, the Medditeranean and North Africa until school age at 5 when her family returned to North Wales, Clwyd and settled between Ruthin and Denbigh in a place called Llanrhaeadr where she attended a Welsh speaking school, learning to read and write initially that tongue.

Ketama’s love of dance began at an early age inspired by the feeling of flight whilst running through the fields and woods of her home.

She started her journey with the discipline of ballet and tap before moving to London where other modern and contemporary styles of dance caught her attention . . . dedication to the dream of dancing became a daily ritual.

In the 1990’s Ketama decided to follow her heart, and dance her way around the world!  As a showgirl, explorer and adventurer she lived and worked in India, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Iceland and Europe discovering new musical influences and experimenting with different ways to move and use space.  During these times she danced hard and questioned everything!

In the late 90’s inspired by a deep interest in dance movement therapy Ketama began training with Rowan at Spiderflower: Contemporary Earth Dance.  She embarked on a years cycle of residential workshops. These experiences were not only deep, but magical and transformative using arcane knowledge (wheels) to guide the dancer through their personal choreography.  The dancing created an overflow of energy and movement to include other areas for expression such as drumming, sacred dance, Raqs Sharqi and singing.

In 2000 Ketama attended Laban Centre and studied an introduction to dance movement therapy & did some contemporary dance training.

Following this, in 2005 she taught freestyle dance in local primary schools with the national dance company.

Her passion for dancing continues, she is now mother to two beautiful boys and is studying for a BA Hons in Music Production & Creative Recording at the University of Brighton.
